“How much does a website cost?” is one of the first questions every business owner asks, and “it depends” is the least useful answer. Website design prices in South Africa vary widely because the word “website” covers everything from a five-page brochure site to a full online store connected to your CRM. This guide explains what actually drives the cost of a business website, shows real published price points, and lists the questions and red flags that help you compare quotes with confidence.
The short answer
A small, professionally designed business website is the entry point, a lead-generating business website with CRM integration and SEO foundations costs more, and e-commerce or custom functionality costs more again. At Scion, our published website packages start at $695 for a Launch Website, $1,390 for a Business Website and $2,490 for Business Pro, with e-commerce from $2,190. Prices are in US dollars, applicable taxes are additional, and online orders are charged in rand through PayFast.
What drives the cost of a website
- Number of pages: every page needs structure, copy, design and testing. A five-page site and a twenty-page site are different projects.
- Design: a template with your logo is quick. A custom design built around your brand and your buyers takes more time, and usually converts better.
- Functionality: contact forms, WhatsApp buttons, booking systems, CRM integration and API connections each add build and testing time.
- E-commerce: a product catalogue, cart, customer accounts, payments and order management are a significant step up from a brochure site.
- SEO foundations: page titles, meta descriptions, structured data, speed and a sensible site structure are what make a site findable from day one.
- Content: someone has to write the words and source the images. If the designer does it, the price reflects that.
- Support after launch: fixes, small changes and help in the first weeks after going live.

What about e-commerce with PayFast?
PayFast is one of the most widely used payment gateways for South African online stores, and it supports card payments, instant EFT and other local methods. An e-commerce website with PayFast integration costs more than a standard site because it has to handle products, stock, orders, customer accounts and secure payments properly. Remember to budget for PayFast's own transaction fees, which are charged by PayFast, not by your web developer.
Template or custom website design?
A template website is faster and cheaper to set up, and for some businesses it is enough. The trade-off is that templates are built for everyone, so they rarely match how your buyers think, what they need to see before they enquire, or how your sales process works. A custom website starts with your offer and your customers, then designs the structure, pages and calls to action around them. For a business that relies on its website to generate enquiries, that difference in structure usually matters more than the visual design.
How long does a website take to build?
Timelines depend mostly on scope and on how quickly content and feedback come back. As a rough guide, a small business website takes a few weeks, a larger lead-generating site takes longer, and e-commerce or integration-heavy projects take longer again. The most common cause of delay is not design or development but waiting for copy, images and approvals, so it helps to prepare your content early and agree who signs off each stage.
Why speed and mobile matter for your budget
Most visitors will see your website on a phone first. A site that is slow or awkward on mobile loses enquiries you have already paid to attract, whether through ads, SEO or word of mouth. Page speed also affects how Google evaluates your site. When comparing quotes, ask how the website will be tested on mobile devices and what the developer does to keep pages fast. It is a better predictor of value than the number of pages on the quote.
Ongoing costs to budget for
- Domain name renewal, usually yearly.
- Hosting, which affects speed and reliability. Ask whether it is included and what happens if you move.
- Business email, if it is not part of your hosting.
- Maintenance: software updates, security patches and backups.
- Content updates, if you prefer someone else to make changes.
- Ongoing SEO, if you want the site to keep gaining visibility after launch.
Red flags when comparing web design quotes
- You will not own the website, the domain or the content when the project is paid for.
- Hosting is locked to the developer with no clear way to move.
- A template is presented as a custom design.
- The site is not tested on mobile, or page speed is not mentioned at all.
- No SEO basics: no page titles, descriptions or structure for search.
- The scope is vague, so every change later becomes an extra cost.
- There is no support period after launch.
Questions to ask before you hire a web designer
- How long will the website take, and what do you need from me?
- Do I own the website when it is paid for?
- Is hosting included, and can I move it later?
- Can you integrate my CRM, WhatsApp or booking tool?
- Is SEO included, and what exactly does that cover?
- What happens after the support period ends?
A website no one finds is an expense, not an asset
The cheapest website is often the most expensive one if it never brings in an enquiry. A well-built site gives SEO something to work with: fast pages, a clear structure and a page for every service you want to be found for. If you need more than a website, such as a customer portal, a booking system or a quoting tool, that is a custom web application project, and it is worth planning both together.
